Harriette Thompson has become the oldest woman to finish a marathon after crossing the line at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego at 92 years of age.
She beat the record set by Gladys Burrill, who was 92 years old and 16 days, and Thompson managed to beat this by 46 days.
She ran the 26.2 mile marathon in seven hours and 24 minutes, and let’s be honest the fact that she finished at all is seriously impressive, and when you consider that she managed to run it doing under 17 minutes per mile, it really just takes on another level of jaw dropping.
Thompson is a marathon veteran, and this is actually her 15th completed one, with the cancer survivor running it for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society after losing her brother and brother-in-law to the disease. Amazing stuff.
