Kathryn Beale has been selling placenta smoothies for a couple of years, but now the council have stepped in to investigate her.
Kathryn insists that her smoothies are healthy and risk-free, and is hoping that Swindon Borough Council agree with her soon, so that she can carry on business as usual.
She told the Daily Star:
The health benefits are great.
After giving birth, most mums are anaemic to some extent, and placenta is full of iron, so it helps with that. It also helps with post-natal depression, baby blues and milk production.
Most species of mammal eat their own placenta straight after birth, raw – it is normal in the animal kingdom.
The smoothies are made by blending some bananas with organic berries and water… and three inches of placenta. The rest of the unused placenta is ground into powder to be made into tablets.
I had NO idea this was a thing. A quick bit of Googling and I’ve discovered that apparently it’s not uncommon. So there we go, that’s today’s lesson.
Somebody, I don’t know who, contacted the council and asked what my hygiene rating was, and I don’t have one yet.
The council have known for years about my business as I am a food business. Hopefully it will be sorted soon and someone will come, inspect my equipment, and give me a hygiene rating.
I don’t think I could drink one, it’s too disgusting. And I hate smoothies!
