Hold onto your hats ladies and gents. Apparently, there is set to be a worldwide shortage of Prosecco.
The Italian carbonated wine is seriously popular and a nice compromise between Cava and Champagne, and after a poor harvest (new information to us as well) the best case scenario is that the price of Prosecco will shoot up, the worst case scenario is that it will go off the shelves altogether.
Roberto Cremonese, export manager of Bisol, was speaking at the London Wine Fair this week and claimed:
Last year’s harvest was very poor, and down by up to 50% in some parts, so there is a very real possibility of a global shortage.
Because there is such a demand for Prosecco, the négociants are releasing it onto the market slowly and are taking it as an opportunity to put prices up, in some cases by 50%.
So there you have it. Bubbly is on the way out.
