An AirAsia flight flying from Indonesia to Singapore with 162 people on board including one British man and his daughter has gone missing.
Flight QZ8501 lost contact with air traffic control at 06:24 local time (23:24 GMT Saturday) over the Java Sea.
No distress call was made when the Airbus disappeared midway into the two hour flight from the city of Surabaya.
A spokesman said:
We are aware of an incident regarding AirAsia flight QZ8501.
Our thoughts are with the passengers’ families as they await further news.
We have been informed by the local authorities that one British national was on board. Their next of kin has been informed, and we stand ready to provide consular assistance’.
The Briton in question is Chi Man Choi from Hull, and his daughter Zoe, who were flying to Singapore to reunite with family.
Search helicopters have since stopped searching due to bad weather, and will continue at 7am tomorrow, or earlier if weather is clear.
