When this poor Zebra fell into a mud pit, it was pretty much over for him (I’m saying him by default because I’m unsure on its sex – it’s Monday leave me alone).
However in a twist of fate, a Rhino drinking from a water hole nearby saw the commotion – and came to his rescue.
The Rhino lifted the foal from the mud, but in a horrible turn of events indadvertedly impaled it with its own horn. Devastating.
The incident was pictured by Roel van Muiden a wildlife photographer from the Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa.
I have had many comments from people seeing the photos asking why I did not retrieve the foal from the mud.
The zebra’s herd was gone so even if I could have, he would not have survived as his mother and harem were nowhere to be seen and thus he would have died from starvation.Advertisement
