Justin Kwan is a second year analyst with Barclays’ global power and utilities group, and he is also someone who has found himself the subject of a fair bit of unwanted attention of late.
Kwan sent an email round a group of first year interns and it was not exactly something you would want going vial, but of course given we live in 2015, it has.
His email is all about how to survive as an intern and he cites ten commandments that people should live by religiously, and while it is probably something that goes on up and down the country, Barclays are not impressed that it has gone viral and are denying all knowledge or authorisation.
Here are a couple of the commandments he sent out:
We expect you to be the last ones to leave every night….no matter what. That’s what good summer analysts do. (Also getting in earlier than me would be a power move – You should enjoy your casual 9:15AM PT arrival time this Friday, but I wouldn’t get used to it).
Never take your jacket off at work. This is investment banking, ladies and gentleman. Other groups may be more liberal when it comes to summer dress code, unfortunately were not.
I recommend bringing a pillow to the office (yoga mat works as well). It makes sleeping under your desk a lot more comfortable, in the very likely scenario that you have to do that.
Personally, I think that the email is pretty standard – interns expect not to sleep and do coffee runs, but come on Justin, we never put anything like that in writing. It will go viral and you will be in trouble.
