The world was in shock when Cecil the Lion was shot and killed by Walter Palmer, but one part of the story did manage to raise at least part of a smile on people’s faces.
Cecil’s brother, Jericho, took on the role of protector to the lion cubs left behind, and after fears that the young lions would be killed alone in the wild, and it seemed like a bit of good had come from the horrible situation.
That was until Jericho was gunned down by poachers, once again leaving the young cubs unprotected.
It is a tragic bit of news, and one that has sparked outrage and mourning, with the shooting thought to be part of an illegal hunt in Hwange National Park.
Johnny Rodrigues, Chairman for Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force released a statement and claimed:
It is with great sadness and regret that we report that Jericho was shot dead at 4pm this afternoon.
We are absolutely heartbroken. We have no further details but will advise as soon as we know more.Advertisement
It raises yet more questions about the level of enforcement when it comes to illegal hunting, but at the very least, the issue is now firmly in the mainstream media and will have to be addressed.
