It’s a very 21st century crime and one which will worry anyone who owns a webcam – a pervert hacked into victims’ webcams so he could record them performing intimate sexual acts in front of their computer.

Stefan Rigo, 33, from Leeds has been placed on the sex offender’s register and handed a 40 week suspended sentence, after he admitted to spending up to 12 hours a day filming or photographing people engaged in sexual acts over Skype or in front of their computers.

He was caught via an international operation to catch cyber-voyeurs, which found that he used a malware computer program called ‘Blackshades’ to access and control people’s cameras. Incredibly, he actually paid for the software using his ex-girlfriend’s bank details.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) said Rigo was addicted to monitoring his victims, some of whom he knew and some who were complete strangers.

Angela McKenna, senior investigating officer for the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit, said:

People using malicious tools like Blackshades can massively violate the privacy of their victims, and use compromised computers to facilitate further crime.

Users of these tools are continuing to find that despite having no physical contact or interaction with their victims, they can still be identified, tracked down and brought to justice by the NCA and its partners.

So be very careful what you get up to in front of your computer! Further guidance can be found at Cyber Streetwise and Get Safe Online.
