As a doctor, there must be few things more heart-breaking than the loss of a patient, but when one is only 19 years of age, it must hit you even harder.

Looking at this photo, that seems to be exactly the case, with one doctor from Southern California doubled over on the floor in grief after losing a teenage patient then having to call his time of death.

While we think it’s so admirable that the doctor cares so deeply, he should still be so proud of the lives he saves and work both he and his colleagues do – and we think the picture and his hurt just sums up what makes doctors and nurses so special.

Reddit poster NickMoore911 is an EMT responder and captioned the picture with:

The man pictured was unable to save one of his patients.

Though this is a common occurrence in our field of work, the patients we lose are typically old, sick, or some combination of the two.

The patient that died was 19 years old, and for him, it was one of those calls we get sometimes that just hits you.

There is no other way to describe this than absolutely tragic – and our thoughts go out to both the medical team and the victim’s family.
