One man has sued Facebook after learning that his daughter was exposed to sexual predators, at only age 11.
His daughter made several Facebook accounts, despite not being old enough, and while her father acknowledged that she was wrong to do so, he still sued the social networking site for the fact that they failed to enforce their obligations and age restrictions.
The unnamed girl, from Northern Ireland, posted suggestive pictures of herself under multiple accounts, and contacted men through the accounts.
Family lawyers claimed Facebook had a ‘duty of care’ to the girl – and breached it by failing to delete her accounts soon enough.
Court documents claimed:
By registering an account and using Facebook the child might be exposing herself to sexual predators or other grave risks affecting her emotional and physical health.
[Facebook] are obviously aware that children who should not be using Facebook are doing so by using the simple device of misrepresenting their age.
Facebook have now settled out of court, with the trial originally scheduled to begin on Monday.
