After suffering homophobic remarks from opposition teammates who suspected he was gay, Betsy Layne High School basketball player Dalton Maldonado finally cracked in the locker room and came out to his teammates who could not have reacted better.
Sadly for Maldonado, the same cannot be said for the players from the opposition team, who not only hurled further abuse at him, but also tried to chase the team bus and smash its windows, with police eventually having to be called.
Dalton refused to back down to the bullies and would not withdraw from the tournament. What a hero.
Assistant coach Brandon Kidd claimed:
Dalton had often hung out with the younger players. After that happened the senior boys really took to him and they accepted him for who he was. It was one of those stories, where they all bonded together.
They didn’t look at him as gay or straight, they just looked at him as their brother.
His teammates deserve a huge amount of credit for the way they reacted – but how nice would it be for this to be the norm and not the exception to the rule?
