Crohn’s disease sufferer Bethany Townsend became an internet sensation earlier this week when her holiday snapshot went viral.
The 23-year-old aspiring model from Worcester posted a bikini picture online which proudly showed off her colostomy bags, and now hundreds of other sufferers have followed suit in support.
Many of the photos are being displayed on the Crohn’s and Colitis Facebook page with sufferers speaking out about their symptoms and the way in which their illness has affected their lives.
Marcia, a 41-year-old mother of two, said ‘still here for my 2 amazing sons’ and ‘thankful every single day and praying a cure is found.’
Marcia said she was diagnosed with Crohn’s in 2006 and is now in remission.
Vickie Morris, pictured below, admitted that she had held back uploading this particular image to Facebook because she was scared of what people would think.
However, she added: ‘I have battled Crohn’s Colitis for the past 4 yrs and close family and friends will know how much this means. Here goes nothing eek! I wear my bag with pride.’
Colostomy bags are often used to divert some of the body’s waste products after some of the intestine has had to have been cut away, often from illnesses like Crohn’s and colitis, as well as bowel cancer.
Great stuff, ladies!
