It looks like online pornography has been more or less banned in India, after the country blocked access to 857 adult websites, dating sites and pornographic blogs.

The Indian government reportedly ordered internet companies to block access to the websites over the weekend, much to the chagrin of many across the country who attempted to access X-rated material this morning.

The full list of the banned websites has been posted online by the Centre for Internet & Society, in a document that many have pointed out is a comprehensive list of many of the web’s most popular porn sites, but which also includes websites like Adult Friend Finder (adult dating site) and Fleshbot (a porn blog).

The order to block the sites was reportedly received late on Friday and the government asked the bans to be put in place by today.

Banned sites appear to show up in different ways depending on the internet service provider, either displaying a message telling users that a site is “blocked as per the directions received from Department of Telecommunications, Government of India”, or just not showing at all.

Local reports claim that the bans were made under ‘Rule 12’ – a part of the country‚Äôs ‘IT Act’ that gives the government the power to force ISPs to block certain sites.

Just last month, the country’s Supreme Court refused to block porn in response to a petition that linked it to sex crime, which was taken to mean that the country would not impose such a ban. However, according to Reuters, the home ministry submitted further information after that ruling and the ban followed a letter sent to the telecom secretary.

The government has to say why the sites have been blocked within 30 days. Some Reddit users have suggested that the porn bans fall outside the scope of that law, and so it could be challenged and undone in court. We get the feeling that many Indians will be hoping for just that!
