Islamic State militant and executioner ‘Jihadi John’ has been identified.
The BBC this morning confirmed that the wanted IS man is Mohammed Emwazi, a ‘young’ Brit from West London known to British security services.
Emwazi first appeared in a video in August last year, when he apparently executed U.S. journalist James Foley. Since then he has been the alleged executor of US journalist Steven Sotloff, British aid worker David Haines, British taxi driver Alan Henning, and American aid worker Abdul-Rahman Kassig.
The most recent of these videos was last month, where he appeared in a video with Japanese hostages Haruna Yukawa and Kenji Goto, shortly before they were killed.
One of Emwazi’s friends told the Washington Post:
I have no doubt that Mohammed is Jihadi John. He was like a brother to me. I am sure it is him.
Emwazi is believed to have traveled to Syria in around 2012, then later joined the Islamic State, the group he has been at the forefront of since last year.
