Experts believe that ‘Jihadi John’ has fled to Libya after his cover was blown.
The infamous figure from Islamic State’s gruesome beheading videos is believed to have left Syria after his identity was revealed as 26-year-old Mohammed Emwazi from London.
U.S spies believe that IS have sidelined Emwazi after he lost his “fear factor” and was revealed to be “a baseball hat-wearing West London street gang member”.
The executioner has not appeared in one of ISIS’ videos since January and many thought he had been killed or severely wounded in an airstrike.
However a source with America’s Joint Terrorism Taskforce, which along with the CIA and U.S special forces DEVGRU is hunting Emwazi, believes he has slipped over the border after they picked up communication intercepts.
Speaking to the Sunday Express, an anonymous MI5 insider said:
We think it is a tactical move by ISIS to keep Emwazi out of the limelight. His unmasking by the Press took away the mystery surrounding his ‘bogey man’ persona and though we have targeted him with conventional missiles we have had no confirmation of a successful strike. We have picked up communication intercepts to suggest Emwazi has been in Libya and remained there over a number of days.
Emwazi was given the nickname ‘Jihadi John’ by a group of hostages being held captive by ISIS, because he was part of a four-person terrorist cell with British accents nicknamed ‘The Beatles’.
