It’s easy to believe that your favourite celebrities are nice people, partly because they have good PR teams, partly because you want to like them. But deep down we know they’re all dicks. Well not Keanu Reeves.
The Matrix star actually seems to be a genuinely nice guy. He’s made countless anonymous donations to charities, shared wages with the lower ends of production teams and even gives up his seat on trains.
When it comes to money, Reeves doesn’t give a fuck, well at least not as much as most people. When working on “The Devil’s Advocate”, he gave up millions of his own cut of the film in order to get Al Pacino on board. Then did a similar thing in “The Replacement” to secure Gene Hackman. It’s a shame this had to happen, but Keanu Reeves just loves making movies.
Something that’s even more noble, however, is what he did during the making of The Matrix films. It is estimated that Reeves gave away $75 million of his Matrix cut to the people that helped make the film, just because he felt they deserved it more. He gave $1 million dollars to every member of the team who helped to create the special effects and costumes. He also gave the entire stunt team of the sequels a Harley Davidson motorcycle, each. I mean, what a guy.
Then there was this special case where Reeves heard about one of the guys at the very bottom of the film production food chain. Someone came forward and gave their account of what happened on Reddit:
“A family friend builds movie sets, doesn’t design, is one of the poor dudes that just builds. Anyways he worked on the set for the Matrix and Keanu heard about family trouble he was having and gave him a $20,000 Christmas bonus to help him out. He also was one of the only people on the set that genuinely wanted to know people’s names, would say hello and mean it, and would talk to people as they were his peers and not below him just because they were practically making nothing to build a set. I’ve never heard anyone say Keanu is douche, seems like the nicest person in Hollywood from a second hand experience.”
Keanu Reeves. What a legend. I’d like to think I’d do this kind of thing if I was in his position but then again I have had my eyes on this super yacht for a while…
