We are all for the old innocent until proven guilty mantra but after you have been convicted of a crime, that should obviously change. For most of us it does, but over 1,000 doctors across the UK seem to be exempt from that little ruling, with the General Medical Council allowing them to keep their licences to practice medicine despite convictions ranging from anything from driving offences to rape.

The fact that patients do not have a right to know this makes the situation even worse – and the public outcry cannot have been unexpected.

Roger Goss of Patient Concern claimed:

It is incredible that the GMC and NHS think it unnecessary or inappropriate to warn parents with children needing treatment that their doctor enjoys child pornography.

Three of these convictions were for rape and five for child sex abuse – something that is disturbing to say the very least. 16 were convicted of using illegal drugs and a couple were even found guilty of supplying them.

Understandably that news does not sit well with most people, nor does the fact that the GMC have ignored the majority of these convictions when assessing if doctors should be allowed to keep their licences to practice medicine – with the majority of the 496 doctors who went before the GMC allowed to keep practicing.

A custodial sentence automatically means an appearance in front of the review board but given that does not seem to mean much, you can see why people are worried.
