Pizza is well nice, that’s an established scientific fact, right? In fact, it’s pretty much a life saver.
A desperate man was on a freeway overpass in California, threatening to kill himself.
Police waited for several hours to try to stop the man, before sending a robot in, carrying a phone and a pizza.
The San Jose Police Department said that giving food to people in these kind of situations is the optimal way to get people to cooperate with them. And to be fair, pizza is obviously one of the best possible snack choices.
Negotiators attempted to talk to him via a remote PA system, but that is not the optimal way of talking to him, so the decision was made to deliver a phone to him. The safest way to do that and not cause confrontation was to use a robot.
They sent in a Northrup Grumman bomb disposal robot, carrying a pizza, and a phone which was connected to police officers. The robot would not release the pizza until the man picked up the phone. The robot has cameras and mics, so the police could properly take control of the situation from there.
Thankfully, the standoff ended when the man stood down. He dropped his knife and turned himself in to the police.
