2013/14 Premier League Team of the Year

de gea 4461372

David De Gea.

The Spanish shot-stopper has arguably been Manchester United’s top performer this season. De Gea had been subjected to heavy criticism during the earlier part of his United career, however, he has proved the critics wrong and adapted fantastically well to the English game. The United keeper has come to the rescue for The Red Devils on numerous occasions throughout the campaign.

Right Back:

Seamus Coleman.

What a great bit of business by Everton. The young Irishman has been outstanding this year, and cost the Toffee’s just a fifth of what Wayne Rooney makes in a week. Coleman is a tireless worker, and always a threat going forward. The lightening quick fullback has scored six goals this season, and is a part of an Everton side that currently share the second best defensive record in the league with Man City.

Centre Backs:

John Terry.

Terry has benefited hugely from regular first team football this season. Mourinho has shown confidence in the 33 year old Chelsea captain, and the decision seems to have payed off. The ex-England captain is a natural leader and an excellent reader of the game. Chelsea currently hold the meanest defensive record in the league, a feat which may not have been possible without Terry’s commanding presence at the heart of the defence.

Gary Cahill.

The 28 year old Englishman has been consistently solid at the back all season, and has formed the best defensive partnership in the league alongside John Terry. He is quite similar to Terry, as he is highly disciplined and covers the basics of defending so well.

Left Back.

Luke Shaw

Hard to believe that this lad is only 18. He’s had a cracker of a season, and is now one of the hottest properties in English football. Questions have been asked about Shaw’s defensive capabilities, however it is important to remember how young he is, and to realise that he will grow defensively with experience. There can be no complains about the attacking side of Shaw’s game, he has the ability to outpace any defender in the league, and has been a great attacking outlet for The Saints this season.

Central Midfielders:

Yaya Toure 008 320x192

Yaya Toure.

The monstrous Ivorian really is the ultimate midfielder, he is powerful, athletic and composed on the ball. Toure has scored 18 Premier League goals this season, and has been without a doubt City’s best performer.

Adam Lallana.

A consistent performer that has played in every league game for The Saints this season. The young Englishman is a hugely talented playmaker, so talented that Pochettino calls him ‘The English Iniesta’. Lallana has also chipped in with 9 goals from midfield this season.

Steven Gerrard:

It looks as though the majority of people disagreed with Aaron Ramsey being part of the team of the year due to the fact that he missed half the season, this is a fair point. We’ll stick in Stevie G to keep everyone happy. He has had a great season, chipping in with 13 goals, and looks set to lift the Premier League Title. Other possibilities included James McCarthy and Wayne Rooney.

Left Wing:

Eden Hazard.

The young Belgian has had an outstanding season, scoring 14 Premier League goals and setting up 10. Hazard has been greatly entertaining to watch, and been a nightmare for defenders all season long. At 23, he still has the world at his feet, and it would not be surprising to see Eden Hazard blossom into one of the world’s finest players.

Right Wing:

Liverpool v Newcastle Luis Suarez celeb 2856246 320x169

Sticking Suarez on the right wing, however it will be more of a roaming role for the Premier League’s top performer. The Uruguayan has been phenomenal this season, scoring 29 goals. However, it is not simply goals that make Suarez a great player, he has also assisted 25 goals. He is a team player and a leader, Suarez has been one of the best players in world football this season, and is the main reason why Rodgers men are on course to land the Premier League title.

Daniel Sturridge.

The Liverpool frontman has flourished under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers and has bagged 20 Premier League goals this season. Sturridge has lightening pace and has scored some screamers throughout the course of the campaign.
