A series of rare photographs from inside Osama Bin Laden’s secret compound have finally been revealed, giving an insight into the life he led before becoming the most wanted man on the planet.
The photos were taken by Palestinian journalist Abdel Barri Atwan and were revealed at the trial of al-Qaeda lieutenant Khaled al-Fawwaz. Abdel was invited to the hideout by Osama himself in 1996.
The compound – that was based in the Afghan mountain region of Tora Bora – show just how primitive a life Bin Laden led with his al-Qaeda brothers.
The hideout was scarce for bedrooms and was accessed by a series of caves and tunnels. Those that lived there – including Osama’s sons – would often go extremely hungry.
It’s reported he deliberately chose the location as it was extremely hard to get to and any soldiers wishing to attack it would have trouble getting there in a stealthy manner.
