This is wrecking my head, I won’t lie. In the best possible way, of course. A BLIND painter?!
John Bramblitt went blind at 30 due to epilepsy, which is a terrible thing to happen. He refers to that part of his life as ‘the deepest darkest hole’, but he didn’t let his lack of sight hold him back, and started to get creative.
He started out by painting picture outlines using quick-drying textured paint, that way he could feel the lines with his fingers. Then he realised that each colour had its own specific texture, and felt different, so he could tell them apart. His paint tubes use braille, so he can differentiate them and mix and blend to create the colours that he needs.
And his work is incredible.
At first the idea of being able to draw without eyesight didn’t even occur to me. It wasn’t until a year after going blind that I began to figure out a way to be able to draw again.
Check out some more of his work:
I am AWFUL with a paintbrush, and I can see what I’m doing, so hats off to the guy!
