Medics have issued warnings after the first case of Ebola contracted through sex was reported.
A woman contracted the disease through an STD, after the man she had sexual intercourse with passed it on – despite recovering from the disease himself, and no longer testing positive for it.
The New England Journal of Medicine revealed the woman, from Liberia, was initially infected earlier this year, tragically dying in March.
Now, survivors have been warned to avoid sex for weeks after they are given the all-clear, due to it lingering in the blood.
This is despite Doctors Without Boarders moving to calm fears of an STD epidemic, stating transmission through an STD is a rare event.
Ebola is passed through direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids, making sex an obvious way for it to be contracted.
