The president of Uruguay, José Mujica, is already a legend. He lives on a ramshackle farm, consistently gives most of his income to charity and is always doing good deeds.
Good deeds like this latest one. Where he picked up hitchhiker Gerhald Acosta who was walking from from work in Juan Lacaze, Uruguay.
He picked him up in his iconic VW Beetle with his wife Lucia Topolansky, but it wasn’t until he got in and sat down for a minute when he realised he’d just hitched a ride with the president of his beloved country.
I couldn’t believe it. The president was giving me a ride. When I got out, I thanked them profusely, because not everyone helps someone out on the road, and much less a president.
Imagine David Cameron picking up a hitchhiker. It just wouldn’t happen. You can’t even jog past that muppet.
