With millions of people all fighting for supremacy, dating apps like Tinder are an absolute minefield, especially when it comes to crafting an effective opening line.
It’s particularly galling when you spend ages coming up with some kind of creative and witty first message, only to be met with no response and left wondering where it all went wrong.
Luckily for us, dating website Hinge decided to put opening lines to the test and see which actually garnered the most replies from both guys and gals.
For the experiment, Hinge wrote more than 100 opening lines, and then selected 22 per cent of users at random to take part in the experiment, comparing response rates for the various messages.
As Hinge spokesperson Jean-Marie McGrath explained:
For one month, when those users matched with someone new, they received an in-app prompt to send one of our conversation starters (the conversation starters were randomised).
In total, the experiment produced a whopping 8 million user impressions! So, according to the research, here’s what you should be saying if you want to get that elusive reply on Tinder.
First of all, it’s been well documented that a simple “hey” just doesn’t cut it anymore…
Questions are usually the best way to go, although some of these popular openers may surprise you…
And, guys, it turns out you should be asking potential matches about food if you want a response…
And, yes, timing is everything…
