This kitchen manager at a school has been fired for giving free food to poor kids.
Della Curry worked at Dakota Valley Elementary School in Aurora, Colorado, and was found to be giving away food to some kids that couldn’t afford to by dinner.
There is a free-lunch program in place, where a kids family has to earn less than $31,000 to qualify for a free dinner, or less than $45,000 for a reduced price dinner. But Curry says that some of the children were from families that were over the limit by the smallest amount and couldn’t afford it.
At Cherry Creek school, any child can get free food – A single bun with a slice of cheese on. Curry ignored the rule, as she saw that wasn’t enough nutrition for any human.
It isn’t a one-off, Curry has done it several times, even paying for kid’s food out of her own pocket.
I had a first grader in front of me, crying, because she doesn’t have enough money for lunch. Yes I gave her a lunch.
Cherry Creek released a statement saying that ‘anyone who has ever been terminated has violated some kind of written policy’, to which Curry replied:
I’ll own that I broke the law. The law needs to change.
While she did break the rules, she did it through the best of intentions.
Good on her.
