A petition started on Change.org is demanding that the North of England break away from the ‘London-Centric South’ and join an independent Scotland – and it has amassed over 25,000 signatures.
The creator of the petition, Stu Dent (somehow I get the impression that’s not his/her real name), argues that northern English cities ‘feel a far greater affinity with their Scottish counterparts such as Glasgow and Edinburgh than with the ideologies of the London-centric south’.
The petition was started last year during the Scottish referendum, but it lost momentum following the no vote. However, it has now been given a new lease of life following the Conservative reelection.
George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, is the only MP in the Conservative cabinet with a northern constituency. Osborne is keen to devolve further power to northern cities as part of his vision to create a ‘northern powerhouse’.
Osborne has already granted Greater Manchester control over a £6bn NHS budget, however, clearly for pun lover Stu Dent and many others, that’s not enough.
