The former escorting boss of The Only Way Is Essex girl Maria Fowler reportedly made up to £1.5million running her agency while claiming £117,000 in benefits and tax credits.
A court heard this week that Janine Adeleke, 42, ran Carlton’s Of London while simultaneously sponging off the government.
Her family enjoyed private medical insurance and memberships to the David Lloyd gym, while one of her children was also sent to the lucrative Roedean boarding school for girls, Canterbury Crown Court heard.
For eight years between November 2006 and October last year, Adeleke failed to disclose ‘significant income’ – most of which came from the escort business.
Speaking in court, Prosecutor Allastair Walker said: “It is the Crown’s case that while claiming benefits she came to run a successful and expensive escort agency which boasted ‘VIP models of poise, sophistication and stunning good looks for elite gentlemen.’ The profits she made from this she never declared.”
He continued: “Over the years, the defendant received nearly £1.5m of undeclared income. At least £650,000 should have been declared to revenue and customs.”
The jury also heard that in 2011, she laundered receipts through accounts in the name of her old and frail mother, when she suspected the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) had her on their radar.
After pleading not guilty, Adeleke was convicted on seven counts of cheating the revenue, fraud and money laundering.
Greed gets you nowhere.
