A traveller community that received a huge government grant to improve their site and build a community centre on it didn’t exactly spend their money wisely.
The Glynmill Gypsy and Traveller Site in Merthyr Tyfdil, South Wales was handed a £1.3 million grant by the government in 2011, but instead of refurbish their site they decided to turn it into a massive weed farm.
A convoy of over 30 police vehicles raided the 130 resident residential site this week and found £70,000 worth of weed growing there.
Chief Inspector Phillip Ashby, of South Wales Police, said:
We were able to act on some good intelligence and put a large and complex operation together. Before today, a small minority of individuals linked to the site had done their best to prevent outside engagement with the site, and it is now clear why.
Sixteen residents were arrested.
