Loads of middle class white girls contrived some fun on camera and have subsequently felt the wrath of the internet.

A sorority video from the University of Alabama chapter of Alpha Phi has caused outrage due to its lack of diversity. The recruitment video features the sorority’s 72 sisters frolicking about in a ‘forced fun’ kind of way, running hand in hand, blowing kisses, wearing bikinis, all the stuff that apparently happens at US sororities.

It kicked off with an article claiming the video was ‘worse for women than Donald Trump’, which derided it as:

so racially and aesthetically homogeneous and forced, so hyper-feminine, so reductive and objectifying, so Stepford Wives: College Edition. It’s all so … unempowering.

This prompted an online backlash that forced the sorority to remove the video, as well as their social media pages on Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr.

Promoting diversity should be encouraged at all levels of society, but if a sorority is genuinely comprised of young white girls, what can they do? If that’s who’s in the sorority, then they can’t pretend otherwise.

On the other hand, I think their video really does nothing to promote gender equality. Advertising their sorority like this – promoting body image over substance – is a terrible way for them to be ever taken seriously as bright young women.
