When 24-year-old soldier, Pan Zhishan, was separated from his wife amid war with Japan 70 years ago, he never gave up the hope of seeing her again.
And at the old age of 94, the war veteran’s wish has finally come true.
‘What took you so long?’ Zhang Suiyu said to her husband after they were reunited after seven long decades. Brilliant.
The couple married against their families wishes and without their permission, as traditional Chinese families forbid it. But, with the risk of never seeing each other again, they went ahead with the ceremony.
‘We both expected to be dead at any moment, so we snatched what joy we could from life’, Pan says.
After surviving the war, Pan was sent back to Eastern China where he grew up. He was quickly ordered into an arranged marriage and was forced to live out his life by this parents orders.
Now some 70 years later, Pan and Zhang were finally reunited thanks to an internet campaign.
What Pan didn’t know was that before leaving, Zhang was pregnant with his son. He says: ‘Some years after I’d left she sent me a picture of herself and of our son. I was shocked and always kept the pictures with me wherever I went.’
In 2003 he went in search of his first love and his child and initially came to a dead end. But an internet campaign by local media has finally brought the family back together.
94-year-old Pan confided: ‘I now have everything I ever wanted from life. The last wish in my life has been met’.
