An 11-year-old boy was banned from school yesterday after turning up as Mr Grey from 50 Shades of Grey for World Book Day.

Year 7 pupil Liam Scholes turned up at Sale High School in Manchester wearing a Christian Grey costume packing cable ties and an eye mask.

But it didn’t take long for teachers to tell him his outfit was ‘offensive’. They then banned him from all World Book Day activities including a class photograph.

His mother, however, was surprised to hear the news when a teacher had turned up as Dexter, the notorious serial killer.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, she said:

One of the teachers went dressed as Dexter and I don’t see why sex is seen as more offensive than murder.

If it was a primary school I could understand but it’s a secondary school and the book and the film have been everywhere – it’s one of the most famous books in recent years and it’s not like the pupils will be unaware of it.

We thought it was funny. We were walking home from school and he had the idea of going as Christian Grey. At first we laughed it off but the we discussed it with a few friends and saw the funny side and decided it was quite a good costume idea.

His school are yet to comment. But what do you think?
