With the official election campaign kicking off, there are currently no MPs in the UK. Literally. They don’t exist right now.
And parliamentary rules state that every ex-MP has to make it clear on their social media accounts that they are now just election candidates – as opposed to MPs.
Which means if an ex-MP has changed his Twitter handle, it is literally up for grabs.
Here’s a good example of this…
This is SNP MP Angus MacNeil, who used to go by the handle @angusbmacneilmp – until he decided to change it from MP to SNP.
Then, to prove a point, BuzzFeed came along and whipped up his old handle.
But being the good people that they are, they gave the account back to Angus. However, the internet is a wild west, and we’re not sure it will be so smooth for some MPs.
As of right now, we don’t know which handles are up for grabs, who has already changed theirs and who hasn’t – but it’s an extremely interesting scenario.
Today MPs have to remove 'MP' from their @Twitter handles… Happy CyberSquatting everyone
