Glen Powell reveals Sydney Sweeney affair rumors were part of plan that worked ‘wonderfully’

Anyone But You's Glen Powell admitted to 'leaning into' rumors he and Sweeney had an offscreen flirtation

Glen Powell has shocked fans with an admission about the rumors that he and Sydney Sweeney were an item.

The rumors abounded while the pair were working together on Anyone But You, so much so that one interviewer even asked them directly if they were dating.

Now Powell has finally spilled the beans.

In an interview with the New York Times, the star revealed that the pair had 'leant into' the rumours as part of their on screen chemistry.

He said: "The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry.

"Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry."

The actor praised Sweeney as 'very smart', and revealed that they had used the rumors to boost their sense of chemistry in the film.

He said: "That's people wanting what's on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart."

The movie is loosely based on Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, which sees characters caught in a web of betrayal, mischief and misdirection.

There's also a classic 'enemies to lovers' plot with Beatrice and Benedick, which appears to be the elements that Anyone But You latches on to.

The movie follows two ex-lovers as they meet again at a wedding in Australia.

When it opened at the box office Anyone But You didn't do brilliantly, bringing in just $6 million on its opening weekend.

But the movie went on to take a whopping $200 million during its box office run, making it the highest grossing R-rated romcom since Bridget Jones's Baby.

So what happened?

Well, the rumors about Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney happened.

The pair were all over the media with rumors that they were engaged in an affair.

This was only compounded by making flirtatious remarks around each other.

But it turns out that at the end of the day, it was all a ruse to draw attention to the movie, and a rather successful one it would seem.

Sweeney has denied that there is anything romantic between her and her co-star Powell.

She said: "That's obviously not true. Me and my fiancé produced the movie together, and he was there the entire shoot.

"I just want to let everyone know that he's the man of my dreams, and we're still together and stronger than ever."
