DoorDash driver shares the amount she makes for an hour of work

DoorDash driver Tiana gave an insight into the job

A lot of folks embark on a side hustle as a delivery driver to support their main wage, but how much do they actually make?

Times are hard. There's no doubt about that, so some people are taking on more than one job to pay the bills.

And being a delivery driver is a great way of bringing in extra cash, especially since you can essentially be your own boss.

You decide when you start and when you clock off work - what's not to love?

One favored delivery chain is Door Dash - a San Francisco based company that also operates in the likes of Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Japan and the US.

Drivers who work for the company are made up of three things: Base pay (time, distance, desirability), promotions (peak pay, challenges), and tips.

And perhaps for the best considering the heated debate surrounding it, drivers are able to take home 100 percent of their tips.

Elsewhere, base pay is DoorDash’s base contribution for each order and peak pay occurs during busy periods of the day.

As shown in the clip above, DoorDash driver Tiana starts by explaining to her TikTok followers that she plans to start work at 6.30pm for one hour.

"Hey it's currently 6:30 I'm gonna DoorDash right now and let's see how much money we make," she says.

"First, order $8.75 picking up from some random restaurant that I don't know."

Tiana soon discovers that she's stood outside of the wrong restaurant and quickly makes her way to the correct diner.

When picking up the order, Tiana says: "Just kidding I'm an idiot. This s**t smells amazing."

After delivery, the TikToker reveals she got tipped $7 from 'rich people' and was soon onto her next order.

"Next one is $9.25 it's from this place called Koi sounds fancy so let's do it," Tiana explains.

"Definitely fancy also this feels like so light like it's probably just like one roll of sushi but you know who orders that? Rich people."

Tiana then realizes that she's low on gas and that her hour is seemingly up.

She claims to have made $21 for one hour's work, however, after gas, that allegedly equates to '-$4'.

Commenting on the viral clip, one viewer thought: "I Door Dash too, and it takes me all day just to make a $100, there's no money in it."

Another added: "As a delivery driver myself one hour with door dash minus gas sounds about right."

"If they are closed or someone took the order, call the company and tell them and they will give you compensation!!! It’s usually $3 but better than nothing," a third wrote.

Meanwhile someone else suggested: "I’ve learned the first hour is just your gas money and I always dash for at least 3 or more hours."
