Woman who lives in town where almost everyone lives in one building explains what it’s like

There are some areas which leave visitors baffled, and this town is one of them.

The Alaskan town of Whittier is one of the strangest places to see, and it’s not because of its scenery.

Small towns aren’t uncommon, but a town with just 300 people?

That’s not so normal - especially when a large portion of the community lives under one roof.

But according to one woman who lives there, it’s not so bad.

Formerly used as a US military base, Whittier is a tiny place in Alaska which is home to a port, abandoned buildings and tower blocks of apartments.

With a giant tunnel leading to and from the place, there’s not much to see, but to those who built a life there, it’s normal.

Jennessa, aka @messy.nessy on TikTok, shared her experience of living in the town for the last seven years back in 2021, and people went wild for how bizarre it is.

“In this building there’s a post office, a church, a store and a building office.

In the basement of this building we have a tunnel that runs from this building to the school across the street." she said.

“There’s currently 318 people that live here.”

The scene outside of her building shows a snowy mountains, the ocean beside the port and several buildings which look like warehouses.

While it doesn’t look like much of a town, what is inside of the tower block is enough for many to live on and it seems like it would bring the community closer together.

In another video, she went on to explain that during the summer and when the climate is dryer, the town like to go hiking and kayaking together.

I wonder if it’s the whole town doing those things at once? That would be fun to see.

But there were those in her comments that were unsure about the peculiar arrangement.

One person said: “I don’t want to seem mean, but ik that has to be depressing.”

Another wrote: “No sneaky links for you.”

Someone else said: “So if somebody accidentally set their kitchen on fire the whole town is gone?”

But if you’re wondering why everyone lives in one building and they don’t just buy the surrounding land to build homes on it, there’s a very good reason.

According to Jennessa, the land is owned by the railroad company, which prevents anyone from adapting the landscape.

That’s a shame.
