Tough new laws could soon see child rapists punished with chemical castration and microchipping.
According to The Mirror, Indonesian officials could sign the draft legislation into law within days, following the horrific gang-rape and murder of a 14-year-old schoolgirl on the island of Sumatra last month.
The victim was found dead, tied up and naked in woodland, three days after the attack.
Under the regulations, not only would convicted paedophiles have microchips implanted into their ankles – allowing them to be constantly monitored by police – they may also be forced to undergo chemical castration.
The law would also see a raising of the maximum jail term for child rapists which is currently 15 years.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has reportedly given his consent to the strict new law, and a justice ministry spokesman confirmed that both microchips and chemical castration are definitely under consideration.
Asrorun Niam Sholeh, head of government-backed child rights group, the National Commission for Child Protection (NCCP), told AFP:
The microchip will be fitted before the criminals are released from prison, and is needed to monitor and locate them after they are freed.
A decree to introduce the new laws could be signed this week.
It certainly sounds like a pretty strong deterrent.
