The family of Oscar Pistorius have claimed they have received a chilling message, threatening that the former Paralympian will be gang raped in prison, unless they pay a bribe.
The blackmailer – who remains anonymous – has warned Pistorius that he could be violently beaten and gang raped, unless his family coughs up enough money to pay for evidence that would undermine the prosecution’s case against him, their family spokeswoman said.
Pistorius, 29, is facing more than 15 years in prison after killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.
He was initially convicted of culpable homicide, but this has since been converted to murder.
Last week, he was asked to walk on his stumps in court, in an attempt to prove his ‘vulnerability’ during the incident. His defence claimed that he was ‘seriously compromised’ and ‘without anything’ he would have been unable to defend himself.
The defence went on to claim that Pistorius was suffering from an anxiety disorder.
His family have now been threatened with extortion over the former Paralympic champion’s impending sentence.
The gruesome demands were texted to Pistorius’ cousin Arnoldus on June 16, only a day after the pre-sentencing hearing ended.
They requested money in exchange for evidence that the prosecutor had paid a witness, who ended up testifying against Pistorius.
When the cousin didn’t respond, this is when the person began making direct threats against Pistorius, which would be carried out by his fellow inmates.
Police are now investigating the threats, but have yet to make any arrests.
Pistorius is set to be sentenced on July 6.
