A paedophile who ‘fought like a pit bull’ after being caught out by vigilante group Dark Justice has been jailed for two years.
A video posted by the group shows 40-year-old Richard Hewitt trying to smash his phone in an attempt to destroy evidence and allegedly fighting back when he was confronted in the street, reports the Daily Mail.
Driving nearly 200 miles from Cheshire to Newcastle, Hewitt thought he was going to meet a 13-year-old girl after he made contact with a fake profile – set up by Dark Justice – on a teen chat room.
Hewitt – who has been subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) since 2007 – asked the girl called ‘Jessie’ for naked selfies and messaged her on Whatsapp asking for sex and telling her he would be ‘her first’.
With 26 previous offences on his record, Hewitt admitted attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming and breaching his SOPO and was jailed for two years with Judge Robert Adams saying he had a ‘bad record for sexual offending’.
During the sentencing, Hewitt could be heard mumbling ‘I’m sorry’ and ‘I need help’ until he was told to stop interrupting.
Outside court, Dark Justice activist ‘Scott’ said he and another member were injured in the struggle with Hewitt. One of them suffered a bite injury while the other had a suspected dislocated thumb.
He snapped his own phone and bent it like a banana, trying to destroy the evidence.
He went crazy, he absolutely flipped out, he looks like a chihuahua, but he fought like a pitbull.
Dark Justice has been running for two years this month and has led to 64 arrests and 34 convictions.
