He then forced her onto her back and climbed on top of her, saying: “You are going to enjoy this.” But incredibly, the young woman managed to fight back, using her keys to cut his face and biting down on his tongue until he fled.
Her courage has now been marked by South Yorkshire Police, who presented her with a bravery award.
Superintendent Scott Green, told the woman, who must remain anonymous :
You displayed an astonishing level of bravery during this investigation, your actions undoubtedly deterred the offender from continuing his assault.
Your detailed recollection of such a traumatic event, led to the arrest, conviction and imprisonment of a very dangerous criminal.Advertisement
As a husband, as the father of a daughter and on behalf of every woman in this city, I commend you.
Holmes was caught on CCTV in Sheffield city centre, hiding behind walls and watching lone women before starting to follow his victim.
He then ran at her, pushing her into bushes – but the woman managed to punch him twice in the stomach with her keys in her hand and started to scream.
Two passers-by heard her cries for help and Holmes jumped over some railings as he tried to escape – injuring himself in the process.
He was eventually arrested, and after pleading guilty to sexual assault, was jailed for four-and-a-half years.
Congratulations – who knows how many attacks this young woman has prevented.
