A British man who faked being a ‘voluntourist’ to get close to children is facing multiple life sentences in Malaysia, after he admitted to an unprecedented number of sex crimes.
30-year-old Richard Huckle, from Ashford in Kent, targeted children between six months old and 12 while posing as a volunteer in Malaysia between 2006 and 2014.
Huckle, who works as a freelance photographer, even went online to brag about his crimes, compiling a hideous paedophile manual.
In the 91 charges brought against Huckle, 23 children were identified, mostly from Christian communities in Kuala Lumpur, although it’s possible Huckle abused up to 200 young victims.
Huckle, a practising Christian, managed to trick the families of his victims by pretending to be an English teacher working abroad.
The debauched predator first visited Malaysia while teaching on a gap year when he was 18 or 19, where he went on to groom children while doing voluntary work.
He was finally arrested for his crimes on December 19, 2014 by the National Crime Agency as he arrived at Gatwick Airport, the Press Association reports.
On his computer they discovered over 20,000 indecent images, including pictures and videos Huckle took of himself abusing young girls and boys in Malaysia.
Disturbingly, authorities also found a twisted encrypted manual on the laptop called Paedophiles And Poverty: Child Lover Guide and a ‘Pedopoints ledger’, a warped diary detailing his rapes and sexual offences.
This hideous private record of the children became a twisted game where he scored his crimes. Under the rules, he could not score for the same sexual activity with the same child in the same week.
Huckle was also accused of attempting to use a site called ‘PedoFunding’ to crowdfund his abuse using Bitcoin.
At the Old Bailey in January, Huckle pleaded not guilty to all the 91 charges, but in the lead up to his trial in April he slowly admitted to 71 of the offences over the course of five hearings.
According to one particularly shocking charge, Huckle bragged: “I’d hit the jackpot, a 3yo girl as loyal to me as my dog and nobody seemed to care.”
At an earlier hearing, Judge Peter Rook QC said:
You have pleaded guilty to 71 counts. As you know these amount to sexual offending of the utmost gravity and as a result I am considering life sentences in your case.
I am also considering the minimum sentence you must serve. In any event you must expect a very long sentence in this case given that it comes into the category of cases of exceptional gravity. As everyone in this court will know, there is no distinction made between victims here or victims overseas. The cases are regarded as the utmost gravity in both cases.
Of the crimes he’s pleaded guilty to, 22 of the offences carry discretionary life sentences and 18 of these are multiple incident counts.
Huckle appeared before the Old Bailey for his sentencing on Wednesday which is expected to conclude on Friday.
