We’ve all been there when it’s 1am and for some reason you choose to get a round of Jagerbombs in, even though you and and all your friends hate them.

Something about the little glass in the big glass is exciting to a drunk mind, so we have one, but the stimulating effect of the caffeine can be really dangerous.

New research said energy drinks can mask the effect of alcohol, causing you to drink more and in turn, increasing the risk of injury from falls, car accidents and brawls.

Audra Roemer, lead author of the study by the University of Victoria in Canada, said:

Usually when you’re drinking alcohol, you get tired and you go home.

Energy drinks mask that, so people may underestimate how intoxicated they are, end up staying out later, consume more alcohol, and engage in risky behaviour and more hazardous drinking practices.

Mixing energy drinks with alcohol can also be dangerous because it makes people ‘wide awake drunk’, according to Drinkaware, which can create a false sense of sobriety.

Drinking such high levels of caffeine, which is promoted by cheap drink deals, can also lead to heart palpitations, anxiety and sleeping problems.

So because of the increased caffeine intake, people tend to stay out longer, and drink more alcohol without realising.

The researchers found 10 of 13 studies, published between 1981 and 2016, linked the consumption of energy drinks and alcohol drinks with an increased risk of accidents and fights.

Stay safe out there. Maybe have tequila instead?
