Chris Pine couldn't quite believe how much money he made on the film

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement was a crucial moment in Chris Pine's career as it marked his big Hollywood breakthrough.

Since then, we've seen the actor feature in the like of 2019 Stark Trek movie and Disney's Wish.

The 43-year-old is even making his directional debut shortly with the upcoming release of Poolman.

However, Pine has been reflecting on his big film break with the 2004 rom-com alongside Anne Hathaway.

In particular, Pine discussed the money he made from the film, something he dubbed as 'earth-shattering'.

Speaking during an interview for an upcoming episode of Sunday TODAY, Pine recalled: "I was on my little Verizon tiny flip phone, my silver one, and I got a call from my agents that I booked the job.

"I pulled over onto the side of the freeway and they said, ‘You’re getting paid $65,000'."

The actor was just 24 at the time, and when the film released in theatres he admitted 'it was like they had just told me I’d made $50 million'.

He added: "It was absolutely earth-shattering. I just remember distinctly knowing in that moment that my life had changed somehow, even though [$65,000] at the end of the day turned out to be about $15,000."

However, the money did not exactly last a long time, as Pine owed his parents rent and his back account was also overdrawn at the time.

"But that is a wild feeling. I’ll never forget that,” the actor added.

At least the money paid off his debts though, eh?

Nowadays, Pine has Poolman to look forward to, a flick he directs and also stars in as Darren.

"A native Los Angeleno who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block and fighting to make his hometown a better place to live," a synopsis for the character reads.

It adds: "When he is tasked by a femme fatale to uncover the truth behind a shady business deal, Darren enlists the help of his friends to take on a corrupt politician and a greedy land developer.

"His investigation reveals a hidden truth about his beloved city and himself."

Poolman is out in cinemas in the US on May 10.
