Dark Souls Creator Discusses The Future Of The Franchise

By : |

From humble cult beginnings, the Dark Souls franchise has gone on to find a modest degree of mainstream success, despite offering a level of difficulty usual reserved for the criminally insane.

So naturally, the fans are eager to know what’s next for the series, following Dark Souls 3. Unfortunately, it seems that developer From Software doesn’t have any more plans for DS – for now.

Kotaku recently spoke with series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki, who revealed that – at least for him – it is definitely (probably) the end.

He explained:

For me, Dark Souls III is the end. But that doesn’t mean the end for Dark Souls. If someone other than myself, like another staff member, wants to make a Dark Souls, then I don’t want to deny others from making future instalments.

Part of his willingness to let someone else at From Software take lead on a Souls game comes from the fact that these days, a ton of people love the franchise, and he doesn’t want to completely rule out the possibility of a Dark Souls 4.

Personally, I’d love a Bloodborne 2 – but by all accounts Miyazaki wants to nudge From Software away from the formula they’ve managed to perfect (You should definitely check out the full Kotaku feature for more on that subject).

Of course, it’s not the end for Dark Souls 3 – not quite yet, anyway. The Ashes of Ariandel expansion is on the way, and publisher Namco Bandai has released a brand new gameplay trailer for it.

The video is called ‘Divert Thine Eyes’, and It shows off a snowy world packed with freakish creatures and monstrous bosses. So, more of the same, basically.

Check it out for yourself below.

Ashes of Ariandel is the first of two DLC expansions, and is due for release on October 25.
