There are an awful lot of Pokemon out there these days, so the chances of anyone ever wanting a Rattata in their intimate party of six is pretty slim.
So obviously, the idea of someone beating Pokemon Fire Red with nothing but a single brave Rattata is ludicrous, right? Yet that’s exactly what one guy has managed.
Twitch is home to Pokémon Challenges, a channel which highlights the self imposed PokeChallenges of a single player.
Earlier in the year, the channel decided to start a play through of Pokémon Fire Red with a particularity gruelling set of rules: Only a single Rattata could be used, and if that Rattata were ever to fall in battle, that was game over.
If that didn’t sound tough enough, the fact that Rattata was the only ‘mon meant that Revive couldn’t be used at any point, making the Elite Four an absolute nightmare.
Pokemon Challenges told Kotaku that the ordeal took dozens of hours, over the course of a month and a half. Twice, they made it to the Elite Four, only to fail and have to start all over again.
But with a fairly decent moveset (Return, Iron Tail, Shadow Ball, and Substitute) coupled with determination, over-levelling, and some seriously strong strategies, Pokemon Challenges won the day in the end.
You can check out the successful Elite Four encounter below. It really is a sight to behold.
Where most of us would probably never want to play a Pokemon game again after such a hellish time, Pokemon Challenges is now hard at work attempting a no-faint run of Pokemon Platinum with Smeargle.
May God have mercy on his soul.
