Titanfall 2 aims to beat its predecessor in every way – most notably by actually including a single-player campaign this time around.

Developer Respawn have been hard at work promoting this aspect of the man-and-mech shooter, with director Steve Fukuda going into great detail over on the game’s website.

Obviously, there’ll be some spoilers coming in this article, so back away now if you’d like to approach Titanfall 2‘s campaign with unspoiled eyes.

Okay, good. So, Fukuda noted that it was always the plan to include a campaign in the new Titanfall, with early prototypes showcasing a ‘typical shooter’ with elements from the first game.

Apparently this wasn’t working, so Respawn decided to challenge its designers to come up with a strong concept that centered around the relationship between the human (Pilot) and robot (Titan).

Fukuda explained:

Each week they would regroup to show and play what they made to the team. They did this for months and created over 100 action blocks (a prototype) that expressed many different ideas around traversal, puzzle solving, combat, and more. From there we narrowed down the best ideas and refined them into the single-player missions you will be playing this October. It was incredibly hard but a welcome challenge.

Titanfall 2’s story is all about human Jack Cooper and his Titan BT-7274. This particular Titan is the first made by the resistance group called the Frontier Militia – The others all came from the shady IMC group.

According to Fukuda, BT ’embodies the Militia’s culture of teamwork, craftsmanship, and looking out for each other.’ – sounds like a good guy.

Meanwhile, Cooper is a low level solider with big dreams of becoming a Pilot. BT initially belongs to another Pilot, but when they’re killed in action, Cooper takes over.

Fukuda continued:

The more they (Cooper and BT) work together, the stronger the link between Pilot and Titan becomes. We drew lots of inspiration from buddy cop movies and other genres that explored the relationship between man and machine such as Terminator 2, and even earlier works like The Black Stallion. In the end we are very proud of the story and relationship that we’re telling in Titanfall 2 and feel that as players get to know BT through the game they will develop their own bond with him as well. We know we did.

Titanfall 2 launches on October 28 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Check out the new cinematic trailer above.
