Guys, if you’re being honest with yourself you’ve probably given this at least a fleeting thought at some point – how long should I be lasting?
Well, now we can all stop worrying if we’re too quick, or on the other hand, if she’s getting bored, as science has revealed the average amount of time guys last in bed.
The survey – published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine – was posted on Reddit by Randal Olson and if you were thinking that a two-hour sesh is the norm then you should probably consider a career in adult film.
According to Olson, the paper looked at premature ejaculation in men, studying groups from Spain, Turkey, Netherlands, the UK and U.S – and the results were, let’s say, interesting.
Basically the researchers got 500 heterosexual couples to track all their sexual encounters over a four week period – timing from the moment it went in to the moment the man ejaculated.
Typically, the men in the study were found to overestimate how long their sex sessions lasted by a whopping 31 per cent. Hmm, come on guys.
So, to the burning issue – what was the actual average? Olson reports the study found that the average time before male orgasm was around the six minute mark.
The majority of the men in the study lasted between four minutes and 11 minutes – although the range varies from a quickie six seconds to a marathon 53 minutes with anything over 21 minutes considered ‘out of the ordinary’.
Olson has helpfully visualised the results for us:
So there you go fellas, next time your mates are bragging about how tired they are because they were going at it for so long, just remember to knock at least a third off their claims…
