Evening Editor – Manchester

UNILAD are seeking a social media savvy Evening Editor to cover breaking and viral news stories overnight for UNILAD’s global audience. A young and innovative media company, our rapidly growing platform connects people to the latest trending stories and news. Based in our Manchester office we offer a competitive salary and regular social events, and we spend way too much time watching and sharing the most awesome content on the web.

Our rapidly growing platform has a global audience and we need someone who is awake when our American and Australian friends are. The position requires a year of related experience and is well suited to an individual looking to join the world of online media and is particularly eager to work in a startup environment.

Working hours will be nightshift, to ensure a continual delivery of trending news. The ideal candidate, will be comfortable in a fast paced and ever changing habitat, and will be able to work independently. Your job is to constantly keep up with the world news as it breaks, you must live and breathe all things trending, especially those that Gen-Y is most interested in.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Obsessively track social media trends across platforms.
Packing and posting content to one of the biggest and most engaged social media platforms in the world.
Scour the deepest and weirdest corners of the internet to find celebrity related stories with the potential to go viral.
Do additional reporting – contact sources, go to locations, attend events – for any
story that requires it.
Write stories so they are targeted to a Gen-Y audience, but in UNILAD’s global style
and tone.
Come up with ideas for posts with effective headlines aimed at sharing.
Participate in brainstorms with other writers and editors.
Provide feedback and support to other writers on the team when required.

Requirements:
1+ years’ journalism experience or working with social media publishing
A strong understanding of world news, viral, and all trending issues.
NCTJ or equivalent.
Ability to write quickly and concisely under deadline pressure.
Ability to discover and identify big stories, alongside, the ability to find clever, funny,
and unique angles on them.
Ability to write both long, thought-provoking pieces and quicker riffs of the news
Ability to spot trends and generate ideas for larger projects. Fluency with images,
GIFs, video and other forms of multimedia.
A positive attitude and understanding of a start up environment.
Educated to degree level or equivalent

Nice to have:
Basic knowledge/experience with Adobe Photoshop
