There are few things in life more fulfilling than traveling – it broadens our perspective, introduces us to new cultures, and according to a new study, improves our health.

Yup, that’s right. Traveling is actually good for you.

Expedia surveyed a total of 31 million travellers who had taken a vacation in the last year. Of those 31 million, 81 per cent of them said they felt better as a direct result of their vacation.

Which shouldn’t really surprise anyone – isn’t that what a vacation is supposed to do? But the study also found that traveling the world actually can help you lose weight, gain confidence, feel younger and even have more sex.

Being a traveller, I can attest to this. It actually does, and it’s great.

Dr. Linda Papadopoulos, who helped Expedia with the study, said:

You’re free to do as much or as little as you like [on holiday], which in turn makes you feel more relaxed. This can help reduce the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.

As stress and anxiety decreases, mood increases – bringing many, often unexpected, positive benefits in how we perceive ourselves, motivation and productivity, and our general outlook on life.

Exposure to a healthy amount of sunshine is also believed to increase the brain’s release of the hormone serotonin which is associated with boosting mood and helping a person feel calm and focused.

According to the study, more than one million people said that traveling increased their sex drive and another million said that they lost weight because of traveling.

Dr. Papadopoulos added: “One of the best things about [travel] is that by coming out of your routine, you don’t have to worry about ‘must dos. You can have new experiences on your terms.”

So if you’re feeling a bit down, want to feel fit or just have more sex, pack your bags and head out to explore the world. Trust us (and a million other people) – travel is the best medicine out there.
