A mother and son who are ‘madly in love’ have been ordered to stay apart from each after.
Caleb Peterson, 19, has been in a relationship with his 36-year-old mother Monica Mares for the last few months, after reconnecting with her last Christmas.
The pair will now have to stand trial for incest charges later this year in Clovis, New Mexico and if they’re found guilty could be sent to prison for up to 18 months, the Daily Mail reports.
They decided to go public with their relationship to raise awareness of Genetic Sexual Attraction (GSA) and attempt to make it legal for them to have a sexual relationship.
Monica gave birth to Caleb, who was initially named Carlos, when she was only 16 years of age and gave him up for adoption not long afterwards.
After getting in touch on Facebook all these years later, they met last Christmas and Caleb moved in with his mum.
He says he fell in love with her, partly because she liked taking care of him.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said:
I never had anyone cook me meals or give me anything. I never got anything my entire life and she went out of her way to make me happy. After about a week or so I started having feelings for her, and I guess I fell in love.
The mother-of-nine felt the same way and says she would happily give up the right to see her other children, if it meant choosing between them and her relationship with Caleb.
The first time we were physical we ended up holding hands, and then we ended up kissing – and the kissing led to other things. I felt comfortable with him and we fell even more deeply in love.
Their relationship has massively impacted on their lives, with Monica afraid to go out in her town with verbal and physical threats a real possibility, while Caleb’s father has walked out on him.
The couple have now been kept apart until their court hearing later this year.
Caleb added: “If I could speak to her now, I would say to her: ‘I love you and I miss you and I can’t wait to see you again’.”
