A new psychological study has revealed that women find one quality more attractive in men than good looks, and it appears that nice guys do actually finish first.
The study revealed that women’s preferences are more influenced by whether a man is altruistic (ie. empathetic or selflessly showing concern for other people’s wellbeing).
As reported by the Independent, to determine the results, scientists showed the female participants different photos of guys accompanied by a description of how they would behave in certain situations.
Descriptions of the eligible bachelors included whether or not they would save a drowning child or buy a homeless person a sandwich.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the women were more willing to pick the lads who were altruistic. But then, would anyone say they didn’t like the guys who cared about people?
The study, published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, concluded that women preferred men who were altruistic, especially when it came to long term relationships.
Naturally, the ideal scenario was to find a guy who’s both altruistic and attractive, although the study did also find that for short term relationships women were less bothered about how nice a guy was. Hey, if it’s just a fling…
The study said:
These findings make a substantial contribution to our understanding of the role of altruistic behaviour in human mate choice by including the previously unexplored additional variables of physical attractiveness. Overall, the results provide further support for the view that altruism acts as an important trait in mate choice, particularly for long term relationships.
So, there you go – there’s hope for us all yet, guys!
